A couple days ago I posted a video of a North Korean girl group. For comparison here’s a recent video from the most popular South Korean girl group, Girls’ Generation. The group is currently eight members (down from nine), and even eight years after their formation their videos still hew to a simple formula. The women will always be dancing to the same choreography on two different sets wearing two different themed outfits, and most of any Girls’ Generation video will be cutting between these two sets. Then there are shots of each individual member wearing an individual (usually “quirky”) outfit, and these will usually make up the plot of the video. And finally there’s sometimes a framing sequence to show the girls in yet another set of themed outfits. It’s testament to the extremely calculated nature of the Korean pop music that so little has changed for the group since 2007.
What I find fascinating about this particular song is that it’s based on an English language pun I’ve never heard anyone make in English (lion=lying).
